5 Stylish Looks for Summer

Stay cool as the weather heats up! From dad denim to vertical stripes, we take a look at some of this season’s style heroes.

The nights are getting lighter, the weather is finally getting warmer and summer is on its way. But is your wardrobe ready for the warmer months? We take a look at some of the key fashion trends that will keep you looking stylish this summer.

80s cool

Fashion always takes inspiration from previous decades, and after several years of 90s-inspired clothing, summer 2018 is taking fashion back to the 1980s. Embrace this look with 80s silhouettes, such as boxy jackets and relaxed blazers (with sleeves rolled up of course!), 80s sportswear, stonewash denim, and pastel hues. Luxury vintage accessories such as used Rolex watches offer the perfect finishing touch. Just be sure to mix up the trend with some classic, contemporary pieces to avoid looking like you’re on your way to a fancy dress party.

All white

One of the key components of the 80s trend – and one of the most popular looks on the 2018 spring / summer catwalks – is the all-white outfit. Yes, that’s right, we’re talking about dressing in white from head to toe. This look is not for the faint hearted, so if you feel it’s a bit too much for you, break up the look by swapping a white top layer for a navy blazer or dark denim jacket. Finish off the look with smart leather sandals or penny loafers in white, black or brown.

Stripes have it

Stripes are a true wardrobe staple and never go out style, but this season the fashion world is serving up stripes with a twist. Instead of the traditional horizontal version we’ve become accustomed to, summer 2018 is all about the vertical stripe. From t-shirts to field jackets, joggers to short-sleeved shirts, this seasons catwalks were awash with vertical-striped clothing. Although this trend is flattering for all body types it can be quite tricky to get right – to avoid looking like you’re in your PJs opt for narrow stripes and pair a statement stripy piece with plain, understated separates.

Check it out

Checks are another pattern worth having in your wardrobe this summer. But we’re not talking about the ubiquitous gingham-style shirts that fill your local Wetherspoons on a Friday night – this season’s checks are altogether more stylish, featuring larger and more complex motifs such as windowpane, heritage and Prince of Wales patterns. Knitwear, outerwear and even trousers can all be given the check treatment – just be sure to avoid going overboard and keep the rest of your outfit fairly neutral.

Dad denim

In another nod to the 1980s, summer 2018 fashion is embracing the re-emergence of so-called ‘dad denim’. More comfortable and much more flattering than their skinny cousins, dad jeans are relaxed, unfussy and light wash – and the really brave might even opt for an ironed-in crease! Avoid excess fabric around your ankles by opting for a cropped style or pin-rolling your jeans. This look works best when paired with statement trainers and a plain t-shirt or, for a dressier look, go for Chelsea boots and a loose fitting pastel shirt.

There really are some great looks to choose from this summer. Some require more bravery than others, but by teaming fashion-forward pieces with classic style staples, you can make a statement without looking like a fashion victim. Whichever look you go for, the key is to wear it with confidence. That way you can stay looking cool as the weather hots up.
